How to Search for a Job During the Pandemic

It is likely that the pandemic has had a significant impact on your job search. As a result, you may need to adapt your approach. But how?

Don’t Limit Yourself

If you’re unable to secure a role in your industry, you could consider working in a different position in another sector. This approach will ensure you continue to earn an income, enable you to develop valuable transferable skills and demonstrate your work ethic to future employers. It could even open the door to a complete career change!

Consider Temporary or Interim Work

A temporary or interim role is a great way to provide an income stream whilst you continue your job search. It can also give you the chance to ‘test drive’ a new job before you commit for the long term. This can be especially helpful if you’re changing profession or industry. With time and once you’ve proved yourself to be a valuable employee, it could even open to the door to a permanent position.

Refine your CV

Given the restrictions of lockdown, you may find that you have a more time on your hands than usual. Use this time to refine your CV to ensure that it presents you in the best possible light. There’s a myriad of free guides and tutorials which you can access online on the job boards, career websites and YouTube.

Master Video Conferencing Technology

With many people working from home and interviews taking place virtually, it’s important that you have an understanding of how to use video conferencing technology. This will help you to prepare for any video interviews and reduce the risk of you encountering technical issues on the day.  There are many different technologies which could be used but the most common seem to be Zoom, Skype, Microsoft Teams, Facetime and WhatsApp.

Prepare for Video and Telephone Interviews

Many organisations are recruiting remotely to safely overcome the challenges presented by lockdown. This includes conducting interviews via video and telephone. With this in mind, it’s important to prepare for these types of interview and consider the variables which may affect you including e.g. internet connection, audio/picture quality and possible interruptions
